Double Page Spread Analyse 2; Research Unit

Double Page Spread

The last double page spread i am analysing is from the BBC Classical magazine. There are many key features that are on this double page spread. The most eye catching part of the double page spread is the main feature article photo. The main feature article photo should be relevant to the given genre and article. This main feature article takes up half of one page but it goes over to the next page. This shows that the photo is the most dominant on the page compared to any other photo's. The photo is of the London Symphony Orchestra. This is relevant to the given genre and article. The camera shot used in this photo is a extra long shot to show everybody in the picture. The reason why this photo is an extra long shot because you can see every body's bodies in the frame of the photo. In an extra long shot you can see the landscape behind the people, this is given extra information about the photo. On the other double page spread the camera shot is a mid shot. This suggest that this double page spread show more range of different camera shots. The mid shot shows only there face and neck whereas the extra long shot you can see there whole body and landscape. The colour of the main feature article photo is black and white. This shows how professional the writers want there photo's to be. It also shows that the magazine can be classy and professional by having black and white photos. Like the other double page spread article they too have black and white photo. It suggest that most classical music magazine contain lots of black and white photo's in there double spread articles. This isn't the only photo on the double page spread. There is a photo of a medal and a program of what the London Symphony Orchestra are going to play. The medal symbolises how old the people are in the article are and how long ago the London Symphony Orchestra went to America to play. The metal is in black and white just like the main feature article photo. This shows that they use there idea's in every single photo. The program is in colour (cream and red). Having one photo in colour gives the double page spread some life and makes the double page spread eye catching. The other double page spread as one other photo this one is in black and white.

Underneath the main feature article photo there is a caption giving the readers extra information about the photo. This is effective because it educates the readers about the photo. The colour of the caption is black. The background of the photo is black/grey. This will make it hard to read the caption. However the caption is on a grey background. The other double page spread the colour is white. This is more eye catching and will draw the readers to read the article and look at the main feature article photo.

The title of this double page spread is very eye catching compared to the other double page spread article. This is because the font used is big and bold. This is strange for a classical music magazine to use eye catching title. The other double spread article used a plain and simple title. The title is in capital letters. This is because they are exaggerating the fact that this article is important to the magazine. Also the capital letters are trying to draw readers to read the article. On the other double page spread article they don't contain capital letters. The reason why they wouldn't put capital letters on there title  is because this article is about some body's life and there work whereas this article is all about an orchestra. The colour of the title is black and white. This is eye catching on the page because the background colour is brown. The colours work well with the page because the photo is in black and white and it shows that they use the same colour scheme throughout the article. The font style of this title is Sans Serif. Sans Serif is used in teenage magazines and gossip magazine. They have used Sans Serif because they are trying to get other generations to read this article. Also Sans Serif is more eye catching than Serif. The other article uses the font Serif. Serif is more formal than Sans Serif. Serif is used in more older magazines.

Underneath the title there is a strapline giving you more information about the title. The strapline gives you information about what the article is going to be about. The Strapline uses the same colour as the title. This is effective because it shows that the magazine uses there original idea's and don't change there mind. If they changed the colour of the strapline then it won't be as effective as it is now. On the other double page spread article they too use the same colour as the title. This shows that classical music magazines use original ideas and uses the same colours. Two words are a different colour on the strapline. The two words are 'Gareth Davies'. The reason why these two words are different colours is because this person remembers what happened in 1912. The font style is exactly the same as the title.

The text is in a nice, neat column. This makes the article presentable and gives the magazine company a good reputation. The language used in this double page spread is standard English and uses both simple and complex sentences. On the other double page spread they too use columns to separate there writing. They also use standard English. This suggest that classical magazines uses complex sentence. This suggest that the target audience is for adults not for younger readers. Younger people like reading simple articles not complex articles. The colour of the font is both white and brown. The brown correspond to the background colour. The brown text is for the most important part of the article. This is effective because readers can just read that bit and not have to read the other part. The font style is just like the title font. On the other double spread article they only use one font colour (Grey). They can be more effective because use one colour looks more professional whereas using two colours makes the article to busy.

The theme of this double page spread is all about America. At the top left hand side of the page there is a map of different states in America. This is effective because it gives the double page spread some class and makes the article different from any other articles out there. Whereas on the other double page spread there isn't any theme's. This is because the article is an interview. The colour scheme of this double page spread is brown, black and white. Whereas in the other double page spread article the colour scheme is white, grey and black.

Front Cover Analyse 2nd

The last front cover i am going to be analysing is another classical magazine, but instead it is a different publisher. This magazine is both similar and different from the other classical magazine front cover.
The first thing the audience will look at is the main feature article photo. The main feature article photo is the photo of the main article in the magazine. This will draw the readers to read the magazine. The main feature article photo is of a well known celebrity Myleene Klass. People will know who she is and will want to find out why she is on the front cover. Unlike the other magazine front cover they didn't have a celebrity, instead they had a main feature article photo about the BBC Proms. These photo's include Gromit (From Wallace and Gromit) drums, conductors and union jack flags. In my opinion people would be more drawn to the front cover with the photo of the celebrity because readers find that more fascinating and interesting. The photo of Myleene Klass is placed in the centre of the page but to the right hand side. This gives the photo more dominance on the page than anything else on the page. The photo also squashes the writing by the size of it. Myleene Klass looks stunning, natural and flawless, this reflects on the magazine. If the celebrity on the front cover looks like that then the magazine must be like this. The photo contrast very well with the plain white background. It gives the sense that the front cover can be simple and effective.

The next thing the audience will notice about the front cover is the mast head. The mast head is the title of the magazine. In this case it's called 'Classical Fm'. The mast head is placed at the top left hand side of the front cover. This is generally where the readers would start reading the front cover, so the mast head as to make a good first impression. The font colour of the mast head is black, white and red. This stands out on the front cover because the background colour is white. The main attraction of the mast head is the colour red on only one letter, that letter is F. The reason why they have used the colour red on only one letter is because the F stands for something special towards the magazine, it catches the readers eye because red is an eye catching colour and it's different from any other magazine out there. The difference on the other magazine front cover is that the other front cover only use one colour on there mast head whereas this on uses 3 colours. The font style of this front cover is Serif. Serif font is used in teenage magazine. Just like the other magazine front cover they too also use serif font. The reason why both magazines would use serif font is to try and grab other generation's to read the magazine. This is because the younger generation don't read this sort of magazine.

Just underneath the main feature article photo there is another photo of the free gift you will receive when you buy the magazine. This is effective in any magazine because this will draw people to buy the magazine. The free gift that you will get when you buy this magazine is an piano album. This will be good for people who play the piano or people who love the sound of the piano. The size of the free gift is a quarter of the front cover. The reason why they would have the free gift being that big is so the readers/audience will notice it and buy it. The free gift is placed at the bottom left hand side of the front cover page. Both front covers have a free gift on them.

The coverline of this front cover is 'my musical mission!'. A coverline gives more information about the main feature article photo. The use of the alliteration makes the coverline memorable and catchy. The coverline is placed at the centre of the page but at the left hand side. The font style of this coverline is also Serif just like the mast head. The other front cover has used Sans Serif. This is different because Sans Serif is more formal whereas Serif is more informal. The use of the explication mark suggest that the coverline is important to the front cover. Like the other magazine front cover they too also use an explanations mark. The colour of the coverline is red. The colour red is the most eye catching colour out there so having the coverline red will make the readers want to read the magazine. The colour of the other magazine front cover is white. This won't be as eye catching as this font colour.

The price of the magazine is hidden from view. They have done this because not  everybody is willing to pay the amount the magazine cost (£4.25). The readers might think that it's too expensive and will want to buy something worth buying not a mgazine. Just like the other magazine front cover it's also hidden. This means that both classical magazines are expensive that's why the price is hidden. The font colour is white just like the background colour. The means that the price is blending into the background meaning it will be hard to read. As well as the price the expiry date is hidden from view too. This will be hard to know when to by the next issue of the magazine. This is exactly the same as the other magazine front cover.

At the top of the front cover there is a powerful puff, the name of the powerful puff is 'The uk's favourite classical music magazine'. This puff is strong because it is quoting that there are the favourite UK classical magazine out there. This is also a biased statement because it's the readers opinion whether it's the favourite classical magazine. The other magazine front cover has a cover puff quoting they are the world's best selling classical music magazine. This quote is more powerful and more persuasive. The colour of the font is white apart from one word 'favourite', this colour is red just like the coverline. The reason why they have used a different colour for that one particluar word is because that word is powerful and the readers will beleive the puff.

The colour scheme of this magazine is white, red and black. There is no particualr theme on this front cover. Unlike on the other magazine front cover there is a major theme that dominates the page. The colours used are simple but very elegant

Content Page Analyse

Content Page Analyse

On a contents page there are certain aspects you expect to see. On this content page there is a mixture of both pictures and text.
The pictures on the content page are spread across the top of the page. This is effective because readers/the audience usually look at the top left hand corner first and that is where the images are. The images used on the content page are used inside the magazine, this can be effective or it won't be effective because people will of seen the pictures already and will be bored of the pictures and not read the article the image corresponded to. However this can be a good thing because the pictures give little insiders on what will be inside the magazine and the audience will get excited and will want to read the magazine. The are 3 pictures that are spread across the page. There is 1 main picture which is dormant from the rest. This is because the picture is bigger in size than the rest of the pictures. This instantly draws attention to this certain picture. There are two pictures that are in black and white and the other one is in colour. This gives the impression that the magazine is classy, the use of editing is at a high quality, and that the magazine is professional. These pictures are all relevant to different articles inside the magazine. It also suggest that these pictures are the most important articles inside the magazine.
Underneath/across from the different pictures there are captions about the pictures. Captions give little more information about the picture but not giving away to much. These captions give you specific page numbers you can turn to, to read the article. This is helpful because the readers can just turn that page whereas if you didn't have the help then you could spend time trying to find the page number. The captions are different colours from the certain picture. For example two captions are in black whereas the other one is in white. The white and one black caption is effective because you can clearly read it and it blends in with the background, however the other one the background is grey/black and the caption is black. People won't be able to read it clearly then the other.
The title of the content page is just called 'Content'. This is simple and straight to the point. This shows that this magazine doesn't need an amazing title they can just use a simple idea and build on it. The font of the title is Sans Serif. This means that the letters have points coming from them. The font size of the title is not big or bold. The reason why the font size isn't big is because they wanted there main aspect of the content page to be about the pictures not the title. The colour of the title is white. This goes well with the content page because the main colour of the content page is white. Behind the title there is a strip of red. This makes the title stand out more and is more eye catching.
Underneath the title there is a small column. This is where the information about what will be inside the magazine. The column makes the content page more neater and tidy. This gives a good reputation on the magazine and the publishers. There are two different font colours, there is red and black. They have used the colour red because there is a red strip that is behind the title. The red font catches the readers eyes because red is an eye catching colour. Red also means anger but it can also means love. The black font is a traditional colour to use on a content page. The font size of the content page is small but still readable. The red font is the title of each important article in the magazine whereas the black font gives you extra information about the article. It gives you information about what to expect every month and what to feature in this issue of the magazine.
Down the side of every article it gives you page numbers on which you can turn to and read the article. This is effective because it saves time trying to find the right page number.
The colour scheme of this content page is;
  • Red
  • White
  • Black
These colours blends in very with each other. These colours show a sense of the magazine being mature and classy. The red symbolises love of the magazine, the white represent pure and plain of the magazine and the black represent the bold of the magazine. On this content page they have used 3 colours, if they have used more colours then it would be too much going on and too much drama going on.

Front Cover Analyse

Front Cover Analysis

Front Cover of a classical magazine

I'm going to be analysing this classical magazine front cover. There are many features of a magazine that stands out on this front cover which makes it different from any other magazine front cover out there.

The mast head is the most important part to any magazine front cover. On this music magazine front cover the mast head is placed on the top left hand corner. This is effective because readers usually start looking at the magazine front cover at the top left hand corner, this will intrigue the reader and will make them want to read this magazine. The colour of the mast head is a bright white. This contrast well with the dark purple colour of the background. The white colour of the mast head makes it easier to read what the mast head is called and it stands out on the page. The size of the mast head is pretty large compared to other mast head out there. This will captivate the reader and will make them want to read the magazine. The font of the mast head is Serif. Serif font is used in teenage magazines, the sun newspaper and gossip magazines. The reason why this company have used serif font is so they can draw the younger generation to read this magazine.

The main feature article photo is another important part of any magazine. In this magazine front cover the main feature article photo is the most eye catching feature in this magazine. The photo is about the BBC Proms. This will instantly gain readers if people love the BBC proms. In the photo there is a variety of different things going on. For example there is two conductors, the royal Albert hall, a union jack drum and flags and Gromit. Certain pictures will draw different people, like Gromit will draw a much more younger audience whereas the conductors will draw a much more older audience. This makes the front cover very busy. The use of the vibrant colours on the pictures make the front cover more lively and stands out more than other magazines. The pictures are spread across the centre of the front cover just underneath the mast head. The size of the pictures are fairly big compared to anything else on the front cover. The main feature article photo doesn't really blend really well with the background because the background colour is deep purple but the photo's are red, blue and white.

Just underneath the main feature article photo there is a photo of an free gift the reader will get when they purchase the magazine. This will intrigue the reader and will make them want to buy it. I think including a freebie in a magazine is effective because if you love the freebie that is included in the magazine then the audience will buy the magazine. The size of the photo is a quarter of the front cover. This is so that people will notice the freebie and will want to buy the magazine. The colour of this photo is different from anything else on the front cover. The colours used are blue, black and white. This gives the front cover some variety of different colours.

The coverline in this magazine is 'The Proms start here!'. A coverline gives more information about what is going on in the main feature article photo. The font style of this coverline is sans serif. Sans Serif is where there is no points on the letters. An example would be The Guardian newspaper. This gives the feeling that the magazine is for a much more older target audience. The use of the exclamation mark suggest that they are excited about the BBC Proms being on. The font colour of the coverline is black. This is effective because people will be able to read the coverline and will understand what it is saying. With the font colour being black and the background colour being white they both contrast very well.

The price of the magazine is hidden very well on the front cover. The reason why the publishers have tried to hide the price is because the magazine is pretty expensive. The cost of this particular magazine is £4.99. To some people this might not seem expensive however to other people this might seem expensive. People want to spend there money on food and there well being not a magazine. The size of the price is so small that you can't hardly read it. This is so people can't read it and will just buy the magazine. The colour of the font is grey/black. This blends in with the white background. Beside the price there is an expiry. This is also very small, this will make it hard for people who struggle to see clearly. They have hidden the expiry date so that people can't tell when to renew the magazine. This will put the magazine out of profit.

On the front cover they include one main dominant puff and that is 'THE WORLD'S BESTSELLING CLASSICAL MUSIC MAGAZINE'. The reason why all the letters are in  capital letters is because they are emphasising the fact that they are the best classical music magazine out there in the world. People will believe this quote and will want to buy this magazine. This puff is located at the top of this page which is spread across the top left hand side. The colour of this puff is white, this stands out on the page because the background colour is purple.
There is one small column placed at the right hand side of the front cover down the bottom of the page. The column have little plugs giving the reader extra information about what is going to be inside the magazine. This will be helpful to people because the readers will know what to expect inside the magazine. If there was no plugs on the front cover then people won't know what to expect inside the magazine.

The colour scheme of this front cover is a British theme. The main reason is because of the Queen's diamond jubilee, the BBC Proms coming to the royal Albert hall. Another colour scheme is a deep purple. The deep purple stands out on the from any other colour on the front cover. The reason why they used purple is because purple is an eye catching colour and people are drawn to the colour purple.

At the top left hand corner they have the logo of the publishers of the magazine, which is the BBC. People will buy this magazine knowing that the BBC published this magazine. The BBC is a well known company and people trust that company.

Analyse of a double spread article

Double Page Spread analyse
Double Page Spread

 In this double page spread there are many features of a magazine which stands out on this page. The main eye catching feature of this double page spread is the main feature article. The main feature article should be relevant to the article and to the given genre, in this case it is very relevant to the genre and to the article. The picture takes up 1 page of the double spread. This shows that the picture is the most dormant thing on the double page spread. They have used a mid shot to show the readers what he looks like but not giving to much away. This is effective to use in my magazine front cover because you don't have to fill up both pages with information and it gives the reader a visual thing to look at while reading the article. The image is of a successful composer, music teacher and conductor. In a classical magazine they always have a double spread article on these sort of people. This is because the audience reading the magazine are adults and adults prefer to read articles about people and about there life. The picture however is in black and white. This shows that the picture looks professional and the magazine is a classy and professional magazine. However this isn't the only picture on his double page spread. There is also an image in the middle of all the text. This frees up all the text and gives the reader another visual thing to look at. It also gives the reader more information about the celebrity. The size of this image is much more smaller than the main feature article. The reason why the size is different because they don't want there article dominated by pictures, they want a mix of both text and pictures. The background of the double page spread is white. This shows that the magazine use simple presentational devices but still manage to draw readers to read the article.

Above the main feature article there is a caption about the picture. This gives you more information about the main feature article. This is successful on a double page spread because it gives the readers extra information about the picture, it also educates the readers about the picture and the celebrity in the picture. The colour of the font is white. This contrast very well with the background being black. This makes the caption noticeable and people will be able to read it even though the size of the caption is small.

The title of the double page spread is not as eye catching as in a rock magazine. The main reason is because a classical magazine is more mature and not in people's faces whereas in a rock magazine it's all to do with catching your eye with the title and using bright bold colours. The colours of the title is a pale grey. This is not eye catching but is still effective on the double page spread. This is because the colours on the double page spread are black and white. Giving a little colour will draw people to the article. With the article background colours being so simple and plain it makes the article stand out and is effective in a classical magazine. The font of this title is Serif. Serif font is more classy, proper and used in newspapers like the telegraph. They have used serif  because the magazine the magazine is aimed at a more older audience and this will stand out to a more older audience.

Underneath the title there is a strapline giving you more information about the title. The strapline gives you information about who the article is about and what is in the article. In the double spread article they have used the same font colour as the title, this is effective because it shows that the magazine use there original ideas and don't changed them. If they changed the colour then the strapline won't be as effective. Some words are much bolder than any other. The words that are bold are the names of who he article is about. The have done this so that people know who the article is about and gives the double page article some more colour.

The text is in a nice, neat column. This makes the article presentable and gives the company a good reputation. The language used in the article is standard english and use some more complex words. This shows that children or teenagers might not be interested in reading this magazine, adults like more complex language whereas children like simple articles. The colour of the font is the same as the title and the strapline. This is effective because it says that the magazine use one idea and expand on that one idea. There is no main colour scheme in this double page spread. The colours that they use is white, grey and black, these colours are simple to use.

Target Audience; Research unit

Target Audience

The target audience for a classical music magazine is for adults aged around 40+, conductors and people who are passionate for classical music. The main reason why these particular target audience would read these magazine's is because adults appreciate classical music more than the younger generation. The younger generation would listen to music like pop, rap and R&B. Another reason why adults would read a classical music magazine is because the language inside is complex and complicated. This will put off children and teenagers from reading this sort of magazine. The reason why conductors would read this sort of magazine is because they can find out some hints and tips on how to do there job or passion. Another reason is because they might be interested in this sort of genre and what to find out some facts about the classical genre. The reason why people who are passionate with classical music would read this sort of magazine is because they can read articles and information about there favourite genre of music.

When readers read this sort of genre of magazine the audience would expect certain aspects to be inside the magazine. The audience will expect to see some sort of a main feature article photo of either a famous composer, conductor or someone famous in this music genre. With having a main feature article photo this will draw the audience to read the magazine. Not having a main feature article photo would make the article front cover boring and it won't attract audiences to read the magazine.
Another aspect that the target audience expect to see in a classical music magazine is lots of information about the given genre, in this cause it's classical. Having lots of information on a music magazine will educate people and make them more knowledgeable about this genre. The reason why adults, conductors and people who are passionate with this genre like lots of information is because they like to read more than teenagers and the younger generation, adults like to learn new facts and be educated whereas the younger generation don't like learning new things as much.
The audience would also expect the front cover to have eye catching  colours but nothing over the top. For example they will expect to see colours like;
  • Navy
  • Black
  • White
  • Brown
The reason why the audience would expect to see eye catching colours but nothing over the top is because these colours draw readers to read the magazine. The colours that the classical magazine use are natural and plain meaning that the magazine can use simple colours which makes the front cover effective.

The first task i did when thinking about the target audience is that i wanted to know what the target audience expect in any kind of music magazine. So i created a questionnaire about the different what they expect in a music magazine. One question i asked is;  What would you expect in a music magazine? Interviews Celebrity insider  Music chart images  New artists      Other. They had to tick the appropriate subject. When i collect my information i wanted from my questionnaire i tallied each question and put them in a pie chart. This would be easier to read what people expected to see in a music magazine. What i learned from composing this questionnaire is what kind of genre the audience wanted and what they expected in a music magazine.

The classical music genre shows that there magazines are aimed at mostly adults, conductors and people who are passionate about this genre of music because the colours are simple but eye catching, the images are relative to the genre. I found out during my investigation that the people prefer the pop genre, they like pictures of there favourite celebrity, they like bright colours that stand out on the page and they expect interviews in the magazine.

Initial idea's Front Cover Research Unit

 These are my initial idea's for my front cover of a classical magazine

Conventions of a classical magazine front cover ; Research Unit

Conventions of a classical magazine front cover

Mast Head;
The mast head is the most eye catching part of any magazine however on this magazine it's not as effective because the colour of the mast head doesn't contrast well with the main feature article photo.  The size of the mast head is large which suggest that this is the main part of the front cover. The font style of this title is 'Serif'. The reason why they have used 'Serfi' is because they want to attract the younger generation to read there magazine. There are no capital letter's on this front cover, this suggest that they don't want anything too dramatic on there front cover. They want something classy and mature. The colour of the font is black. This would be great however the background is blue and black and some of the title gets involved with the black background. This will make it hard to see what the title says. The mast head is located at the top of the front cover. This is effective because our eye's generally looks at the top of the page first.

Feature article Photo;
The feature article photo is buy far the most eye catching part of this magazine. The reason why it's so eye catching is because of the size. The size of the image takes up half of the page. Meaning that the main feature article will be about that celebrity. The main feature photo is of a celebrity which is relative to this genre. For example there wouldn't be a picture of Beyonce on a classical magazine. The image is of the choirmaster Gareth Malone. People will buy this magazine if they like Gareth and if they like the music/ choir arrangements he does. Gareth looks well groomed, this is giving the magazine a good image. The photo blends in very well with the background because the colour of his clothes are grey, navy and orange and the background colour is navy and grey.

Coverline;
The coverline should have some link to the feature article photo. It should be giving some more information about the feature article photo. In this front cover it is giving some more information about the photo. It says 'The nation' Choirmaster'. The font style of the coverline is black and bold. This makes the coverline stand out and attract the reader. However there is no capital letters just like the title. This doesn't make the coverline dramatic but makes it mature and classy just like the title.

Plugs and Free Gift;
The one main convention that is all over classical magazines are plugs. Plugs give little hints and insiders on what is going to be inside the magazine. All over the front cover it is covered in plugs. This is effective because then people will know what to expect inside the magazine. If there was no plugs on the magazine then nobody will know what to expect in the magazine.
Every time you buy this magazine you get a free CD of different composers. If you are into classical music, then you will want to buy this magazine. This will intrigue the reader and will make them want to listen to the free CD and want to read the magazine.

Puffs;
In this magazine there is one main puff that takes over the magazine and that is 'THE WORLD'S BESTSELLING CLASSICAL MUSIC MAGAZINE'. The font is in capital letters. This suggest that this is important to the magazine. It also emphasis that this magazine is the bestselling classical music magazine. People will believe this quote and will buy the magazine. The colour of this puff is  white. This makes the puff stand out on the front cover.

Price, Bare Code and Date;
The price of the magazine is hidden underneath the bar code. The reason why they have hidden the price is because this magazine is expensive to some people. The price of this magazine is £4.99. This might be a problem to some people who can't afford to buy this magazine. The font colour of the price is grey this blends into the white background meaning people won't look at the price and will just buy the magazine. The date of the magazine is place just next to the price. This too is hard to see when the magazine runs out. So people who can't see properly won't be able to see this has good as people who can see.

Colour Scheme;
The colour scheme of this magazine is black, navy and blue. The reason why they have used these colours is because these colours are soft, calm and not in your face. Using these colours show how mature this magazine is. So this will appeal to a more older audience Whereas in Kerrang magazine they will use colours that will be in your face like red's and yellow's.

Proposal for classical magazine; Research section

Proposal;

In media studies we are creating a music magazine, where we have to think about the target audiences, the genre, the images and the language used in our magazine. The genre i want my magazine to be is classical. The main reason why i have chosen this genre is because i am very passionate with classical music, this i what i want to do in the future  and I play a variety of different classical instrument so it will be handy when taking some of the images. I originally thought about doing a rock/indie magazine but i realised that most people are doing that genre. So i am the only person in my class to do a classical genre. This will make my magazine unique and different.

 The target audience for a classical music magazine would mainly be adults, conductors and classical musicians.This is because adults appreciate this kind of music whereas children would listen to pop or rock music. Conductors would buy this magazine because inside it might give them hints on how to be a successful conductor. Also all conductor listen to classical music. Classical musicians would buy a classical magazine because they will find out information about there favourite composers, venues where they can play in orchestras and the classical music chart.

Evaluation Of Preliminary Task

Evaluation of Preliminary Task

                     Front Cover                                            Content Page
Research;

I started the research task by looking through some old school magazines front covers. We looked through these magazines so that we could get ideas for our own magazines we are going to make. From looking at these magazines we realised that in the school magazines they use one main image which takes up the whole page. They use one image because it tells the readers that this is the main feature article in the magazine. The image stands out to the reader and will make them want to read the school magazine. They also use a mast head/ title. They named there title ‘Excel’. The title is bold, bright and uses big font. They made the font clear to read so that people with bad eye sight can read this magazine. The magazine has strapline These are little insiders on what is going to be in the magazine. So readers will know briefly what will be in the magazine. After we analysed some of the school magazines front covers we had to analysis the content page. The content page is very different from the front cover. The main differences is that The content page is very different from the front cover. The main differences between the front cover and the content page is that there is not one big feature article image.  On the front cover there is a dominant image where as in the content page there are lots of little images which are relevant to the magazine. For example; they have used a image of the Head Teacher, and events which have happened other the lat couple of months. In the content page they use columns to separate certain parts of the content page. The columns have been used to tell the readers what article are on which page. Another difference is that on the content page there is much more writing than the front cover. This is because people don't want lots of writing on a front cover whereas on a content page people want to more writing. The writing tells the readers about the school, what's inside and what's coming up.
Planning;
The planning process started by drawing three different front cover pages and three different content pages. The idea's had to be different but effective. We learned how to draw symbol's which will correspond to what will be on the magazine. For example; a box with an x through it means image. However these designs couldn't be complicated because we had to design the magazine on PhotoShop and i haven't used that software before. So i chose a straight forward design. After drawing three front cover designs and three content pages we had to draw our template on PhotoShop. At first PhotoShop was hard to get used too but after a couple of tries i got the hang of the program. In PhotoShop there are a variety of different tools. An example is the rubber tool. This will let you rub out mistakes or rub out parts of the photo you don't want. We couldn't at this stage upload pictures because we haven't took any yet. But we were aloud to place text that we wanted. But i wanted to wait till i took my photo's before placing my texts. Taking the picture's was one of the most important parts of the preliminary task. The reason is because the pictures had to be taken perfectly. So i had to think carefully on what photo's i wanted in my magazine. I brainstormed some ideas and the ideas i had was;
  • Olympics coming through Armthorpe
  • Movie night at Armthorpe Academy
  • WWRY takes over the drama department
  • Sixth form explodes
  • Students go on skiing trip
  • P.E department get new ground

 Finding great pictures was challenging because it was impossible finding some of the ideas i had. For example 'Students go on skiing trip. It would of been impossible finding somebody skiing in a school. On my front cover i wanted a movie theme. So i decided my main article photo was going to be about Armthorpe does movie night. The picture was going to be somebody with a video camera. Another picture i wanted to use is the WWRY (We Will Rock You) logo. The reason why i wanted to use this is because our school's production is WWRY and would of been appropriate to include this . I had to think about what pictures i wanted on my content page as well has my front cover. I wanted pictures that represented the articles used in my magazine. So i decided i wanted to take pictures of the austro turf and an Olympic sign. The reason why i wanted sport pictures is because sports is our specialised subject at Armthorpe and the Olympics has just been on.
Taking the photo's was easier than i thought although i had troubles at first. Firstly i took a picture of the Olympic sign. This picture was successful because it is clear, straight to the point and there is nothing in the background. However when taking a picture of the austro turf it was more difficult. This is because the austro turf was locked up. Nobody could get in so i had to take the photo through the metal gates. This made some of the pictures blurry and not straight. Also the sun was out meaning it was hard getting a clear photo. Another problem was that there was some students having a P.E lesson on he grass next to the austro turf. So i thought when editing i can crop them out.  Finally after a lot of time i finally got my picture.  The picture was clear, not blurry and colourful. The final picture i wanted was my front cover picture. My mast head. This picture was straight forward to take. However i had to ask one of my peers to take it for me. I decided to place the video camera onto my eye because I'm pretending to be filming showing the readers that there's a movie night happening. The quality of the picture is clear and is appropriate to the audience.

Editing;
In my opinion editing was the most hardest/difficult part of the whole process. The main reason is because I've never used Photoshop before. One of the main tools i used was the gradient tool. This is when one side of the page is blue but fades to a more brighter colour. This was effective on both my front cover and content page, this was going to be my background to my images. To get the image the size it is i had to rub out the background that was around the picture and drag it onto my front cover. To get the WWRY image i had to get there off the Internet. The other images i took had to be cropped them to get them the right size because the size was too big for my content page. I wanted the text writing to match the background so i made the writing white. This is clear to read, it is bold and bright. The language used on my magazine is not complicated. This is because both teenagers and adults will be reading and i had to provide for both audiences. The blue rectangle i used the rectangle tool. I wanted to do this because it gives a sense of the magazine being unique and different.

How I Feel About Preliminary Task;
How i felt on the Preliminary task is that i learned some new skills that i can use in my music magazine. I overcame problems to achieve the final product like taking the perfect photo's, and editing the photo's.
If i did the preliminary task again i would change my main article topic. Maybe do less on the sport's because not everyone likes sports and I've got to do topics for both boys and girls. Another thing i would change would be the layout of my content page because i would of liked to include columns.
